Tromsø – A Beautiful City in Norway

Tromsø is one of the best Northern European cities to visit, even though you may not have heard of it that often, or at all. It is located in the northernmost part of Norway, which makes it an excellent spot for admiring the mesmerizing Northern Lights of the cold season. But aside from that obvious attraction, Tromsø is also a vibrant city, with a busy night life, lots of history and art, and an overall sense of sophistication.

History shows that remote as it is, people have been living in this area since about 11,000 years ago. The name of the city, though, was first recorded in 1252, when its first church was erected. Speaking or churches, probably the most popular attraction in Tromsø is the modern Arctic Cathedral, which was built in 1965.

Situated 217 miles above the Arctic Circle, it holds the northernmost university in the world, plus a number of important research institutes. It also sustains a blooming satellite based industry, so it is not exactly a surprise that its inhabitants are for the most part highly skilled.
Some interesting things to see here include the numerous old wooden houses in the city center (with the oldest one dating back to 1789), the Cable Car, the Polar Museum, the Tromsø Museum, and the Botanic Garden.
If you visit it in winter, then the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is probably the most exciting thing to witness, but summer is also great in the city. Swimming, fishing, kayaking and hiking are fun activities to enjoy in Tromsø during the warm season.
